Oh, got it.

And yeah. Female hormones or not, IPAs can be good, but NOWHERE even remotely close to being all that miraculous elixir people claim it to be.

There are many, many good IPAs. The ones that are super hoppy are California-style, where the IBUs are through the roof without a good balance. A lot of MidWest and East Coast IPAs have the malt balance needed to make an IPA that isn’t bitter through the roof. My local brewery produces a special IPA every June that is 9.9% ABV and 100 IBU, and it’s balanced well enough that you get the hop taste without all the bitter (and don’t get the alcohol heat, for that matter). So there’s such thing as IPAs that aren’t overly bitter, you just have to know where to look.

I’ve been through many ales, IPAs, bitters, porters, stouts, etc... since I was 14 and they all vary so much.

I’m a Guinness drinker since I was 14 years old but I do like an IPA, etc... from time to time.

A drink is like music, you don’t have to like all the groups in a genre just because you like one or two groups within it.

Is it just me or are IPAs a lot like novelty hot sauce these days?

Formula:

1.) Cheeky-fun name like Marcellus Wallace’s Ball Gag

2.) Ignore balance

3.) Ignore flavor

4.) Charge a lot for a poor product

We can’t be friends any more.

As much as I love and appreciate several other styles of beer, I’m a hop fiend (and I was before all these damn hipsters fucked it up! Despite my beard, lumberjack clothes, and penchant for Volvos, dammit! I actually jack lumber sometimes! Fuck ‘em!). I will say though, there are some that just go for IBUs over all else, and really, it’s hard to find any benefit of going over 100. Most really well balanced IPAs & DIPAs are somewhere around 60-100, and 9% or less unless they’re Imperials. Beyond that, they tend to get either too boozy, or extremely bitter. Once the first couple of sips are past, and your palate has been suitably wrecked, they’re easier to drink, but that first sip is a shocker. That said, currently in my fridge: New Belgium Ranger IPA, Nectar IPA (locally made), Sierra Nevada Pale, and... Miller Lite. I’d prefer Coors’ finest Banquet Beer over the Miller, but it’s leftover from camping, and I’ll be damned if it’s not refreshing when BBQing or mountain biking.

I can’t stand them. The more bitter ones I’ve actually poured down the drain because I couldn’t suffer through them. Unfortunately it means I don’t like any IPAs, ever, because the taste reminds me of the really strong ones. I don’t know why people make this.

I can certainly understand not being a fan of certain genres of beers (there are several that do nothing for me), but that article is misleading; there is certainly a connection, but the amount of constant, concentrated intake of one element contained within hops needed to produce that effect just doesn’t happen in most beers, even after prolonged drinking of hoppy beers. There was a similar scare with soy milk, with some wannabe health nuts with a complete misunderstanding of science claimed that drinking soy milk decreased testosterone and increased estrogen production. It really doesn’t; the chemical capable of doing so are indeed present, but not at the concentrated levels necessary to produce those effects. Unless you’re drinking six gallons a day for years, you’re not going to have that happen to you.

As for IPAs, there are certainly some that are bad and some that are good. Those that focus on simply getting the maximum IBU count they possibly can over all else tend to be pretty bad. That being said, many other IPAs don’t actually do that. While they are more hop-forward than other beer styles, they still are still generally well-balanced, light-to-medium bodied, and with a slightly malty feel.

If you want proof that an IPA can be good and drinkable without being overwhelmingly bitter, try the following:

Dogfishhead Aprihop IPA
Lagunitas DayTime IPA
Stone Cali-Belgique IPA

All three are in season right now, and are fantastically light, easy-to-drink ales. They are a bit more hop-forward than your traditional lawnmower beers, but they are by no means overpowering, and they provide a very interesting and complex flavor.

I’ve had a decent IPA or two, but I don’t remember what they were. As a rule, I just avoid all of them now that there’s so many that aren’t good.

I’ve been buying major brewing company beers (yuengling), I’m fine with those beers. But usually I get dirty looks from beer snobs. I haven’t tried an IPA yet and the names confuse me (magic hat I’m looking at you, that beer tasted horrible).

I can actually hang with a few, my main hangup is, like you said, the “lets see how much hops we can fit into this bottle” genre.

One of my favorite beers is made by 4 of my high school friends - and it is a double IPA. They killed it
